What is Knowledge Share?

Knowledge Share is a free online tutoring service operated by college students and recent graduates to mitigate COVID-19’s effects on the American K-12 education system. We aim to function as supplementary homework help to the e-Learning systems utilized by students across the country.

Why was Knowledge Share started?

More now than ever, we must do our part as members of humanity to help one another. We cannot do everything, but we can all do something. Additionally, across the country, parents and relatives suddenly have an even greater role in helping our children learn concepts while they simultaneously face their own challenges during this surreal period. Us here at Knowledge Share acknowledge these real obstacles to learning. E-Learning cannot replace a classroom with a dedicated teacher, so we want to assist everyone involved in the learning process by elaborating on concepts, answering any questions students have, and directing them to other reputable resources like CrashCourse videos and The Khan Academy.

How can Knowledge Share help my child?

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions your child has on school material. If they need photosynthesis better explained, we will help them. If they are in AP US History trying to understand the effects of WWI, you’re in the right place. Unsure about a math problem with improper fractions? Let’s take it step by step. Does your kindergartener need reading practice? We can help with that, as well. We will do our best to support all students of all grades with math, science, social studies/history, English/language arts/writing, and computer science.

What are the priorities of Knowledge Share?

1.) Internet Safety
2.) Spreading Knowledge
3.) Pairing students with tutors who have extensive knowledge of the topic at hand

How do I get help from Knowledge Share?

Email your questions to askknowledgeshare (at) gmail (dot) com. We will be virtually “open” from 3-9 PM EST from Monday-Thursday. (We will expand our availability as our team grows.) Please indicate in the subject line what subject and grade your question relates to. Your tutor will either respond directly to the email or send you a private Zoom link if your question requires some elaboration to adequately answer. You will have five minutes to enter the Zoom room before the tutor proceeds to the next student. If for whatever reason you were unable to reach the Zoom room in time, don’t hesitate to send us another email!

Who is on Team Knowledge Share?

College students and recent graduates of all majors.

Knowledge Share started when a history major in her senior year at Indiana University-Indianapolis decided to recruit some friends for this initiative following the President’s announcement of school closures through April. (The idea was inspired by Rose Hulman Institute of Technology’s Ask Rose homework help program.) On our team, we currently have research assistants, teaching assistants, a staff member of the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, a member of the Teach For America 2020 Corps, education majors, and librarians. We want to unite as one with volunteers from all 50 states!

How do I join Knowledge Share?

We are actively looking to expand our team to better meet what we presume will be a growing demand from students across the country. If you are a college student looking to join us, please email us from your school email (for verification purposes) at knowledgeshareteam20 (at) gmail (dot) com. Please include a ~100-200 word writing sample and your resume/CV. While we neither have a formal process nor require specific qualifications, we want to ensure to the best of our ability that we offer students tutoring from individuals who have considerable experience in the subject they’re helping with.

What is the commitment like to volunteer for Knowledge Share?

A single commitment is a two-hour shift, but you can sign up for multiple shifts!

All of us have jobs and class responsibilities we still need to attend to, so we want to make this work-friendly as much as possible.
